Barcode label sizes: Avery sheets and roll labels
The right label size depends on what you need on it: a name, a price, a barcode, or all three. These are the sizes Crisp Labels has built in, with their layouts and what fits on each.
Sheet labels (laser and inkjet printers)
| Sheet | Label size | Layout | Per sheet | Paper | Fits well |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avery 5160 / 8160 | 1 × 2-5/8 in | 3 × 10 | 30 | US Letter | Name, price and a full-size UPC or EAN |
| Avery 5167 / 8167 | 1/2 × 1-3/4 in | 4 × 20 | 80 | US Letter | Price and a short SKU barcode; little room for a name |
| Avery L7160 | 63.5 × 38.1 mm | 3 × 7 | 21 | A4 | Name, variant, price and barcode with room to spare |
| Avery L7651 | 38.1 × 21.2 mm | 5 × 13 | 65 | A4 | Price and barcode, with a short name |
Print one page on plain paper and hold it against a sheet before using labels. Small differences between printers are fixed with Nudge right and Nudge down.
Roll labels (label printers)
| Size | Metric | Fits well |
|---|---|---|
| 2.25 × 1.25 in | 57 × 32 mm | Name, variant, price and barcode |
| 2 × 1 in | 51 × 25 mm | A common retail size: name, price and barcode |
| 1.5 × 1 in | 38 × 25 mm | Price and barcode, short name |
| 1.25 × 1 in | 32 × 25 mm | Price and a short barcode; long SKUs may need very thin bars |
| 1 × 1 in | 25 × 25 mm | A QR code or a short barcode |
| 3 × 2 in | 76 × 51 mm | Large shelf or bin labels |
| 4 × 6 in | 102 × 152 mm | Carton and shipping-size labels |
| 3-1/2 × 1-1/8 in | 89 × 29 mm | Long, narrow labels: name above a barcode |
| 1/2 × 1 in, 2 across | 13 × 25 mm | Price only, or a very short code |
Most label printers print at 203 or 300 dots per inch. Set the same resolution in Crisp Labels so bar widths land on whole printer dots. Setup for each printer is in the label printer guide.

Choosing a size
- Name, price and barcode: 2 × 1 in or larger on rolls, Avery 5160 or L7160 on sheets.
- Price and barcode only: 1.5 × 1 in, 1.25 × 1 in, Avery 5167 or L7651.
- Long SKUs as barcodes: pick a wider label. Code 128 grows with the number of characters.

Common questions
- What is the most common barcode label size?
- For roll labels, 2 × 1 in is one of the most common retail product label sizes. For sheets, Avery 5160 (1 × 2-5/8 in, 30 per sheet) is a common choice because it fits a product name, price and a full-size barcode.
- Are Avery 5160 and 8160 the same size?
- Yes. They share the same 1 × 2-5/8 in label and 30-per-sheet layout. 5160 is sold for laser printers and 8160 for inkjet printers.
- My label size isn't listed. Can I still print?
- Yes. In Crisp Labels, enter the label's width and height (10 to 220 mm wide) and how many labels sit across the roll.
- How small can a barcode label be and still scan?
- It depends on how many characters the barcode holds and the printer's resolution. A 12-digit UPC fits comfortably on 2 × 1 in. On 1/2 × 1 in labels there isn't room for most SKUs as Code 128. Crisp Labels warns you when bars would be very thin or a value won't fit.
