Shopify labels on Dymo, Zebra, Rollo or Brother
A thermal label printer is the fastest way to label stock: no ink, one label at a time, and rolls in the size you need. Crisp Labels makes a PDF at your roll's exact size, so the printer only has to print what it's given. Here's how to set up the common printers.
Sizes and settings by printer
| Printer | Resolution | Built-in sizes in Crisp Labels |
|---|---|---|
| Dymo LabelWriter | 300 dpi | Dymo 30334 (2-1/4 × 1-1/4 in), 30336 (1 × 2-1/8 in), 30252 (1-1/8 × 3-1/2 in), 30333 (1/2 × 1 in, 2 across), 30347 (1 × 1-1/2 in), 11354 (57 × 32 mm) |
| Zebra desktop printers | 203 or 300 dpi, by model | 2 × 1, 2.25 × 1.25, 1.5 × 1, 1.25 × 1, 1 × 1, 3 × 2 and 4 × 6 in |
| Rollo and other 4-inch thermal printers | Usually 203 dpi | 2 × 1, 2.25 × 1.25, 1.5 × 1, 1.25 × 1, 1 × 1, 3 × 2 and 4 × 6 in |
| Brother QL | 300 dpi | DK-1201 (29 × 90 mm), DK-1209 (29 × 62 mm) |
Check your own model's resolution on its label or spec sheet. Some Zebra models come in both 203 and 300 dpi versions.
Setup, once
- Install the driver from the printer maker so the printer shows in your computer's printer list. Print the driver's test page to be sure it works.
- Load the roll and run the printer's label calibration (often a long press of the feed button) so it knows where each label starts.
- Set the paper size in the driver to your label size, for example 2 × 1 in. Do this in the printer's preferences so you don't have to pick it every time.
Every print run
- In Crisp Labels, pick the roll that's loaded under Label size, or choose Custom size and enter it.
- Under Advanced, set Printer resolution to your printer's dpi. Bars are sized to whole printer dots at that resolution, which is what keeps thin bars from blurring.
- Press Print. In the print dialog, choose the label printer, the same label size, and Actual size or 100%.
- Scan the first label before you print the rest.
Common setup problems
- A blank label between each printed one: the driver's paper size is longer than the label. Match it to the roll.
- Print starts partway down the label: recalibrate the printer, then use Nudge down in Crisp Labels for any small offset that remains.
- Everything is tiny in one corner: the PDF was printed on a letter-size page setting. Choose the label size in the print dialog.
- Bars look uneven: the resolution setting doesn't match the printer. See labels not scanning.
No label printer?
You don't need one to start. Avery sheet labels print on any laser or inkjet printer, and Crisp Labels has the common sheets built in. See label sizes.
Common questions
- Can I print Shopify barcode labels on a Dymo LabelWriter?
- Yes. Install the printer's driver so it shows up as a printer on your computer, choose the matching Dymo roll in Crisp Labels (for example 30334 or 30336), set the resolution to 300 dpi, and print the PDF at Actual size with the same label size chosen in the print dialog.
- Do I need special software to print to a Zebra or Rollo printer?
- Only the printer's normal driver. Crisp Labels gives you a PDF sized to your label, and you print it from your browser or PDF viewer like any document. You don't need ZPL or the printer maker's design software.
- Which printers have you tested?
- We print-test on plain paper and check every PDF's dimensions, but we haven't tested every printer model. Because the output is a standard PDF at the exact label size, any printer with a working driver can print it. Print one label and scan it before a big run.
- My roll size isn't in the list. What do I do?
- Choose Custom size and enter the label's width and height in millimetres (10 to 220 mm wide), and how many labels sit across the roll.
